RED LETTER DAY
Another 48hr
Monks Pool session. Conditions looked good for a bite with
Southerly winds and odd outbreaks of rain forecast for the
duration. Arrived mid morning on the friday and set up camp for
the weekend, already having an idea of the whereabouts of where
they were hiding. Usually one to use small baiting tactics I had
been thinking that things were right for a big hit and so
decided to put out a kilo over each rod (thanks to Jules and Bob
at Carp Company for sorting me out - nice one lads). Brew, smoke
and relieved not to be working there couldn't be a happier
camper on the island and things got a whole lot better when one
of the rods was away. Getting proper beat up but eventually
winning the fight I was rewarded with a fish that hadn't seen
the bank since last April. On the scales Chunky went 36lb 2oz -
get in!! Saturday didn't really prove to fruitful other than
seeing 2 fish bosh out but I was happy with the rods and just
topped up the spots with another kilo on each rod. Sunday was to
prove a different story and whilst listening to The blues
playing Villa on the radio another of the rods was away. A
really slow plodding fight told me it was a better fish and it
turned into a proper heart stopper of a fight as the colour had
dropped out of the water and visibility was good to say the
least! After 20 minutes and a proper beating she rolled over the
net cord and my mate John scooped up my prize. The fish turned
out to be the former IOW record fish The Boxer and although down
in weight she turned the needle round to 42lb 12oz what a
result! Piccies done, Happy Days and time for a Guinness!!
Things really didn't have to get any better but when your lucks
in you've got to grab it with both hands and so the rods were
re-done and another kilo of the red on each spot completed the
traps. A good nights kip was all that Saturday night produced
but I couldn't complain and I decided that it looked good for a
bite so decided that a quick top up of 30 baits on each spot was
a plan. Brekkie and a cuppa were next on the agenda but not
before I had made a few phone calls to try and wangle Sunday
night!! Success with the phone call meant I could forget about
packing up early and put my feet up for the rest of the morning
after all I was happy with things and the football was due to
start soon. Evening was on it's way so deciding on an early
dinner I got everything ready when the right hand rod was away.
On it straight away and things were feeling exceedingly heavy so
I decided to let the fish do it's thing and tire itself out.
After five minutes things were starting to go in my favor and so
I moved the net down into position, a couple more minutes and
over the cord sailed a lump. After securing the net I made a
quick call to a mate who said he'd be over in 30 minutes and so
I decided to brew up until the cavalry arrived! Help was soon
here and a few choice words let out as it turned out to be none
other than the Leather - jobs a good'un - up on the Reubons and
the needle of truth settled at 41lb 5oz - awesome!! Loads of
piccies and a quick slurp on the bottle of bubbly that the
cavalry fetched down to celebrate and time to reflect on what a
weekend it had been - 2 x 40's and a 36 made for good reading. I
decided to reel the other rods in for the night and get some
well earned rest before work mid morning tomorrow - and that's
what they call happy camping!!!
In his own words from Taffy, top result
mate
Again the Icelandic Red with C&C do
the job!

Here
we have Oscar Thornton with a brace of 20lb+ Mirrors. Below is
Oscar's own words about the capture
" I
thought that I should send in the pictures of my cracking weekend's
fishing. When I arrived the carp park was empty so I thought I had
the whole lake to myself as I started to get my kit out the car someone
turned up in the carp park it was my mate Matt he had come down for the
weekend as well. we both set off around the lake looking for any signs
of carp. Walking into peg 9 we saw a few fish show at about
100yards so we flipped a coin and the swim was mine! . Because it was
winter I opted to fish a 16mm Aminol Acid tipped with a 10mm pink pop up
in a solid bag of crushed boilie and pellets. I cast two rods
100yard out into the middle were the fish had been seen and dropped
the other rod at about 50yards out on the edge of a drop off.
During the evening I had nothing and I soon drifted off to sleep. I
awoke at 2:30am to the sound of rain beating down on my bivvy. I laid
awake and listened to the sound of the rain and as I did there was a
single bleep followed by a screaming run. After a long and hard
fight I had it in the net I could see it was a big fish for the lake and
went and got Matt we put it on the scales and it went 20lb 2oz! I
was over the moon and couldn't get to sleep after that. In the morning
rods were recast to the same spots and at 9:30 am a few bleeps and
another take came and I bent into the rod only to find it was weeded
up. Keeping the pressure on the fish came free and without any
drama I played her to just in front of me where it sprung into life and
I had to played her for a further 15minutes. We could all se it was a
big fish and finally we got it in the net, it went 23lb 8oz on the
scales and we think that is the first brace of 20s to come out of the
lake."
Well done Oscar, great photos and a
lovely report mate, keep them coming! Good

Taffy
Woodhouse - In his own words!
Turned up at Monks Pool for my first
48hr session a week after it had reopened on a Friday night after work
with the weather looking just about right for ducks and a few fat kippers!
Having been down Wednesday night for a bit of a wreckie to get an idea of
what they had changed in their underwater office. The marker rod revealed
some harder areas had appeared at the bottom of the marginal slope in
front of the swim I fancied and with a depression also pin pointed at
30yrds range a light sprinkling of the Red was deposited ready for the
weekend. With all the kit soaked after the walk down to the pool setting
up would have been a chore if it didn't look so peach. Rods out and a
sneaky Guinness on the go by 7pm everything looked just about right and
just after dark we were away with the right hand rod at the bottom of the
shelf. A cracking fight and a right soaking was the prelude to my second
biggest UK common which pulled the scales round to just over 35lb and what
a peach of a fish. Piccies done and a celebratory slurp and ciggie before
time to change into something dry, some grub and then bed. Sleep lasted
until 3am when the depression rod was away and another soaking ensued.
Another good fight and into the net she went - happy days!! With the rod
rebaited with the red, paced out and clipped up it was back on the spot
within 10 minutes whilst the fish recovered in the net. Piccies and
handshakes all round and another 30 on the cards. Now not having any dry
clothes left the coleman was put on to try and dry some out and a quick
brew before trying to get some zeds. Light came and it was still looking
peachy, but happy with the rods I decided to just brew up and have a bacon
butty which set things up for the day. Just after 10am the marginal slope
rod was away again - heaven!! After 10minutes of a carp trying to do it's
best Houdini impression another mirror was sitting in the bottom of the
net and up on the scales it turned out to be another 30. Wet, stinking and
a can of Guinness to celebrate it was home time for this happy
camper.
Thanks to John and Spence for the
piccies
Also the bottom pic is a fish from
another session on Monks Pool this time turning the scales to 42lb
2oz. All fish falling to the Icelandic Red C&C in 14mm fished as

Here is
a stunning mirror of 36lb 8oz caught by John Copper, the write up is in
his own words, well done mate!
"I
have waited 14 yrs for a fish like this"
I arrived on my local lake, down in Wales on Friday at around
10am after having a look around the lake for 2 hrs and having spoken to
numerous other anglers who hadn't caught anything for more than 3 days, i
just knew that this would be my day knowing i had a great bait in my bag.
anyhow i finally got set up and positioned my traps in areas that i had
saw carp previously in the day. confidence was high i can tell you. and
then at 5.46 that evening my right hand rod screamed off on the Icelandic
Red i knew as soon as i hooked it that this was a big fish after 15
minutes of a battle that i didn't want to end the monster slipped over my
net and with a minutes rest and a big sigh i lifted the net onto my
unhooking mat moved the mesh off the fish i couldn't believe my eyes it
was a fish so big that i couldn't want to take the photos and slip
her back and phone everybody in my phone book AWESOME FISH AWESOME BAIT
thanks mate .
